Commercial Organics Recycling - AB 1826

As of January 1, 2017, AB 1826, a law aimed at diverting organics from the landfill, became effective. All businesses that generate certain amounts of regular and organic waste are required to implement an organics recycling program based on the following tiered implementation:

Implementation Dates

  • April 1, 2016, businesses that generate 8 cubic yards (cy) or more a week must source separate food scraps and yard trimmings and arrange for recycling services for organic waste.
  • January 1, 2017, businesses generating 4 cubic yards or more per week of organics are also subject to the diversion requirement.
  • January 1, 2019, businesses that generate 4 cubic yards or more of commercial solid waste per week must arrange for organic waste recycling services.

For questions or to setup organic waste recycling, contact the Walnut Community Services Department at (909) 598-5605 or Valley Vista Services at (800) 442-6454.
