Parking of a vehicle on a street in Walnut between the hours of 2:00 a.m. and 4:00 a.m. without a parking permit is prohibited and you may receive a parking citation. In addition, failure to properly display the permit may result in a fine.

The reason for the ordinance prohibiting parking during certain hours is to insure residents' safety. Fewer vehicles on the street at night make it easier for Sheriff's Deputies to observe suspicious vehicles and activity, thereby increasing safety in the neighborhood. This policy has been very successful, as evidence by the fact that Walnut continues to have one of the lowest crime rates.

Additionally, the Sheriff's Department and Fire Department can more readily locate curb addresses when the street is clear of parked vehicles, thereby reducing emergency response time. Also, the ordinance helps eliminate abandoned and inoperable vehicles from City streets, thereby improving neighborhoods and maintaining the property values of residents.

As required by the courts, there are signs explaining the overnight parking restrictions posted at all major entrances to the City. In addition to the signs, the City's overnight parking rules are regularly announced to all residents in the quarterly recreation brochure, on the city's web page www.cityofwalnut.org, and in periodic releases.

If you will be having overnight guests, you may obtain one free, 5-day "temporary" parking permit per calendar month at Walnut City Hall. After regular business hours, and on weekends and holidays, permits may also be obtained from the Walnut Sheriff's Station. These temporary permits must be properly displayed in the rear window of the vehicle as you may be subject to a fine for not properly displaying the permit.

Additionally, if your garage and driveway are completely utilized for parking your vehicles, and you require additional parking space on a permanent basis, permit are available on a pre-approved basis. An inspection of your property and acceptance of your application by an inspector is required. The cost of the permit is required when application is turned in, if request is denied only half of the fee is refunded. If approved a six-month permit may be obtained for $26 and a twelve-month permit for $52.

The annual permits are good for the entire fiscal year, from July 1 through June 30 the next year. Parking permits are available at the Walnut City Hall during business hours and at the Walnut Sheriff's Station, 21695 East Valley Boulevard, when the City Hall is closed.
